Discover more about Grand Phare

The Grand Phare, also known as the Ras El Afia Lighthouse, is a prominent landmark situated on Algeria's Mediterranean coast, approximately 6 kilometers west of Jijel. Perched atop Ras El Afia, a promontory extending 500 meters into the sea, it has served as a sentinel for ships since 1867. Charles Salva, a French sculptor, designed and built the lighthouse. It is one of the oldest and largest of the 24 beacons along the Algerian coastline. The lighthouse's architecture reflects 19th-century craftsmanship, featuring a white-painted building crowned by an octagonal tower that reaches 16.8 meters. A red lantern atop the tower once housed a 1000W lamp, projecting its light over 21 nautical miles. More than just a navigational aid, the Grand Phare provides visitors with panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, making it a favorite spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts, especially at sunset. The surrounding rocky shores invite leisurely strolls, birdwatching, and exploration of the unique coastal ecosystem. The adjacent beach is a popular destination, attracting many visitors during the summer months.
