Djamaa el Kebir, or the Great Mosque of Algiers, is a testament to the city's rich history and architectural evolution. Founded in 1097 during the Almoravid dynasty, it is one of the few remaining examples of Almoravid design, though it has seen numerous changes over the centuries. The mosque's location in the Casbah, near the harbor, places it at the center of Algiers' historical district. The mosque's structure reflects a blend of influences. The prayer hall is divided into eleven naves by rows of horseshoe arches supported by white masonry pillars. The minaret, added in 1332, rises from the northwestern corner and is a prominent feature. The mihrab, which indicates the direction of Mecca, was reconstructed in the 18th century after damage from a French bombardment. A portico of columns and poly-lobed arches was added during the French colonial period.Visitors to the Great Mosque can appreciate its serene atmosphere and intricate details. The mosque's design, with its rectangular courtyard and galleries, has served as a model for religious architecture in the region. The prayer hall, with its whitewashed pillars and semi-circular arches, offers a tranquil space for reflection. The reconstructed mihrab, flanked by spiral columns, showcases 18th-century Algiers design. While the Great Mosque has stood for centuries, another Great Mosque of Algiers called Djamaa el Djazair opened in 2019. Djamaa el Djazair is one of the largest mosques in the world and has the world's tallest minaret. Djamaa el Djazair includes a prayer hall, a park, a library, staff housing, a fire station, a museum of Islamic art, and a research center on the history of Algeria.
