Bey's Palace: A Journey Through Oran's Ottoman Past

Bey's Palace, also known as Palais du Bey, is a significant historical landmark in Oran, Algeria, reflecting the city's rich cultural heritage. Constructed during the Ottoman rule in the 18th century, the palace was commissioned in 1792 by the Bey of Oran, Mohamed El-Kébir, after the city was recaptured from Spanish control. It served as both the residence of the Bey and the administrative center of the province. The palace's architecture is a blend of Moorish and Ottoman styles, featuring intricate tile work, ornate wooden ceilings, and expansive courtyards. Throughout its history, the palace has been repurposed, including serving as the French military headquarters after the French colonial forces captured Oran in 1831. Despite these changes, many original architectural features were preserved. In 1865, decorations were added to the upper walls and ceilings for Emperor Napoleon III's visit to Oran. Following Algeria's independence in 1962, Bey's Palace was designated as a national heritage site. The Algerian government undertook efforts to restore and preserve the palace, opening it to the public as a museum.
