Discover more about Fort of Santa Cruz

The Fort of Santa Cruz, one of Oran's three forts, is a commanding historical landmark that reflects the city's rich and often turbulent past. Erected by the Spanish on Mount Murdjadjo (also known as Pic d'Aidour) between 1577 and 1604, its strategic position over 400 meters above sea level provided an unparalleled vantage point to protect Oran from naval attacks. The fort's architecture showcases 16th-century Spanish military design, featuring thick stone walls stretching over two and a half kilometers, punctuated by robust towers. Within its walls, a central castle, or kasbah, once served as the residence for the Spanish governor. Over the centuries, the fort changed hands, with the Ottomans and later the French also occupying it. Near the fort stands the Chapel of Santa Cruz, featuring a statue of the Virgin Mary, a replica of Notre-Dame de la Garde in Marseille. The site attracts visitors with its historical significance and breathtaking views. Exploring the ramparts and casemates offers a glimpse into the military architecture of the era, while the panoramic vistas of Oran and the Mediterranean provide unforgettable photo opportunities.
