Discover more about Fort of Santa Cruz

The Fort of Santa Cruz, a commanding historical landmark in Oran, Algeria, stands as a testament to the city's rich and often turbulent past. Erected by the Spanish on the summit of Mount Murdjadjo (also known as Pic d'Aidour) between 1577 and 1604, the fort was strategically positioned to protect Oran from naval attacks and to control the surrounding region. Rising over 400 meters above sea level, the fort provided an unparalleled vantage point, allowing defenders to monitor the coastline and the approaches to the city. Its thick, imposing walls, constructed from stone and brick, stretch over two and a half kilometers in circumference, punctuated by robust towers that once housed soldiers and cannons. Within the fort's walls, a central castle, or kasbah, served as the residence for the Spanish governor. The fort's history is intertwined with the struggles for control of Oran. Originally built by the Spanish after they seized the city in the early 16th century, it faced numerous attacks and sieges over the centuries. The Ottomans, seeking to reclaim the region, launched repeated assaults, and the fort was expanded and reinforced to withstand these threats. Later, the French occupied Oran in 1831 and took control of the fort. Today, the Fort of Santa Cruz is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its historical significance and breathtaking views. The site includes a small chapel, the Chapel of Santa Cruz, featuring a statue of the Virgin Mary, a replica of Notre-Dame de la Garde in Marseille. Exploring the fort's ramparts, bastions, and casemates offers a glimpse into the military architecture of the era, while the panoramic vistas of Oran and the Mediterranean provide unforgettable photo opportunities. Some claim that the Algerian dish Karantika was created at the Fort Santa Cruz, when the soldiers had no food to eat, the dish was made with old bread and chickpeas.
