Martyrs Memorial: A Symbol of Algerian Independence

The Martyrs Memorial, known locally as Maqam Echahid, stands as a powerful symbol of Algeria's independence. Inaugurated in 1982, on the 20th anniversary of the nation's liberation, the monument commemorates the sacrifices made during the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962).Designed by Algerian artist Bachir Yellès, with engineering and construction by the Canadian firm Lavalin, the memorial's architecture is both striking and symbolic. Three soaring concrete palm leaves, each punctuated at the base by a statue of an Algerian soldier representing a stage of Algeria's struggle, rise 92 meters (302 feet) into the sky.
