Lejdar: Ancient Berber Mausoleums

Lejdar, also known as the Jedars of Frenda, is a significant archaeological site located near Medroussa, in the Tiaret province of Algeria. These thirteen Berber mausoleums date back to late antiquity, specifically the 4th to 7th centuries CE. The name 'Jedar' is derived from the Arabic word for 'wall,' reflecting the monumental nature of these ancient ruins.Situated on two hills in the mountainous Frenda area, about 30 km south of Tiaret, the Jedars served as royal tombs. Three are located on Jabal Lakhdar, and ten on Jabal Arawi (also known as Ternaten). Their commanding presence and size indicate their importance as final resting places for Berber royalty.Constructed from local limestone and sandstone, with some materials recycled from earlier settlements, the Jedars showcase a variety of building techniques. The tombs have been plundered over the centuries, leaving them in a state of ruin. However, their architectural characteristics remain evident, offering insights into the Berber civilization.While the exact historical interpretation of the Jedars is still debated, they are believed to be funerary monuments for Berber kings of North Africa. Some theories suggest a connection to the Berber king Massonas mentioned in historical texts.
