Timgad, also known as Thamugas, offers a captivating glimpse into Roman urban planning and life in North Africa. Founded in 100 AD by Emperor Trajan, the city served as a military colony for Roman veterans in the Aurès Mountains of Algeria. Its original name was Colonia Marciana Ulpia Traiana Thamugadi, honoring Trajan's family. The city's layout exemplifies Roman urban design, featuring a precise grid plan with the cardo (north-south street) and decumanus (east-west street) intersecting at the center. Explore the remains of impressive structures, including a 3,500-seat theater, a public library, a forum surrounded by Corinthian columns, and numerous bath complexes. The Trajan Arch stands as an iconic symbol of Timgad, showcasing the city's grandeur. Originally designed for around 15,000 inhabitants, Timgad flourished as a trade and cultural hub. The city experienced decline due to Vandal invasions in the 5th century and was eventually abandoned after the Arab conquest in the 8th century. Today, Timgad is a UNESCO World Heritage site, inviting visitors to step back in time and discover the wonders of Roman civilization in North Africa.
