Trajan's Arch, also known as the Timgad Arch, is a captivating Roman triumphal arch located in the ancient city of Timgad, near Batna, Algeria. Founded by Emperor Trajan in 100 AD as a military colony, Timgad, or Thamugadi, exemplifies Roman urban planning with its grid system. The arch, however, was constructed later, between the late 2nd and early 3rd centuries. Standing at the west end of the decumanus maximus, the city's main east-west street, Trajan's Arch served as the city's western gate. The sandstone arch reaches a height of 12 meters and features three vaulted archways. The central arch, standing 6 meters high, was designed for vehicles, while the lateral arches, each 3.75 meters high, were reserved for pedestrians. Above the lateral arches are rectangular niches that once held statues. The arch's decorative elements, including Corinthian columns and a curvilinear pediment, showcase the architectural style of the period. The monument is adorned with statues of gods, including Mars and Concordia. Trajan's Arch, partially restored in 1900, remains an imposing structure that exemplifies the grandeur and significance of the Roman Empire. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Timgad since 1982, the arch stands as a testament to Roman influence in North Africa.

From Batna, take the N3 towards Timgad. The journey is approximately 35 km and takes around 30-40 minutes. Follow the signs to Timgad. Free parking is available near the entrance to the archaeological site. There are no tolls on this route.

Public Transport
From the Constantine bus station, take a bus to the Batna north bus station. Then, take local bus number 7 from the front of the north station to the Batna east bus station. From the east bus station, take the bus to Timgad, which will drop you off at the ruins. The entire journey takes approximately 3 hours. A one-way bus ticket from Batna to Timgad costs approximately 100-200 DZD.
