The Sidi Boumediene Mosque, or Masjid Sidi Abu Madyan, is a significant religious and historical site in Tlemcen, Algeria, honoring the influential Sufi saint Abu Madyan. Born near Seville in 1126 and passing away in Tlemcen in 1198, Abu Madyan greatly contributed to the spread of Sufism in the Maghreb region.Founded in 1339 by the Marinid rulers, the mosque is part of a larger complex that includes a mausoleum, madrasa, and hammam. The architecture reflects Moorish influences, featuring a main entrance reminiscent of those in Córdoba and Kairouan. Inside, visitors can admire the gallery of plaster paintings, muqarnas atop the dome, and stairs similar to those of the Puerta del Sol in Toledo. The wooden doors, adorned with bronze, lead to a sahn with a central fountain, surrounded by corridors and a prayer hall.The madrasa, established eight years after the mosque, once hosted lectures by the renowned scholar Ibn Khaldun. The complex also includes Dar al-Sultan palace, which served as a residence for visiting sultans. The nearby Sidi al-Haloui Mosque, built in 1353, closely resembles the Sidi Boumediene Mosque.
