Discover more about The Remains of Mansura Tlemcen

The Remains of Mansura Tlemcen offer a captivating journey into Algeria's rich history. Founded in 1299 by the Marinid Sultan Abu Yaqub Yusuf as a military camp during the siege of Tlemcen, Mansura quickly evolved into a thriving city, rivaling Tlemcen itself. Sultan Abu Yaqub constructed a palace, a mosque, and housing for the military and camp employees. The city was protected by strong fortifications and soon became known as Al-Mahalla Al-Mansura, meaning "the victorious camp". Trade flourished, and Mansura became an important economic center. Today, visitors can explore the remains of this once-great city, including the impressive minaret of the Mansura Mosque, which stands as a testament to the architectural prowess of the Marinid dynasty. The minaret, similar in style to Almohad minarets in Andalusia, reaches a height of 38 meters and offers a glimpse into the city's past. The ruins of the city walls, which once stretched over 4000 meters and were fortified with 80 towers, can also be seen. While much of Mansura was destroyed after the Marinids abandoned the city, the remaining ruins offer a powerful reminder of its former glory. The site provides a unique opportunity to explore Algerian history and culture, and to imagine the lives of those who once called this city home.
