Discover more about Fagatele Marine Sanctuary

Fagatele Marine Sanctuary, located on the southwestern coast of Tutuila Island in American Samoa, is a unique and ecologically significant marine protected area. The sanctuary is cradled within a collapsed volcanic crater, creating a naturally sheltered bay spanning approximately 0.25 square miles. Designated as a National Marine Sanctuary in 1986, Fagatele Bay protects a diverse coral reef ecosystem that has shown remarkable resilience despite facing natural disasters such as cyclones and outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish. These starfish decimated over 90% of the living corals in the late 1970s, but the bay's isolation has aided in its swift recovery. The sanctuary is home to a wide array of marine life, including over 160 species of coral and 271 species of fish. Visitors can encounter sea turtles, reef sharks, and giant clams within its protected waters. The clear waters offer excellent visibility, making it a prime destination for snorkeling and diving. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from May to October. Beyond its natural beauty, Fagatele Bay also holds cultural significance, with ties to traditional Samoan marine stewardship practices. The sanctuary collaborates with local villages, including Futiga, Taputimu, and Vaitogi, to promote understanding and conservation of the area's natural and cultural heritage. Visitors can access Fagatele Bay through the village of Futiga. Checking in with the Fuimaono family, the traditional caretakers of the land, is required before entering the area. A customary fee of $5 may be collected. A trail leads from the village to the bay, offering scenic views of the surrounding landscape. The sanctuary is open Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It is closed on Sundays unless special arrangements are made.
