Discover more about Blunts Point Battery

Perched on Matautu Ridge, overlooking Pago Pago Harbor, Blunts Point Battery is a tangible reminder of World War II's impact on American Samoa. In 1940, as tensions escalated, the U.S. military strategically fortified the island. Marines installed two 6-inch naval guns at Blunts Point, complemented by another battery across the harbor at Breakers Point. Following the Pearl Harbor attack and the fall of Guam, American Samoa became a vital U.S. base in the Western Pacific. While no direct attack ever materialized, American Samoa served as a crucial training and supply hub for U.S. forces. Today, visitors can explore the restored gun emplacements and bunkers via the moderately challenging Blunts Point Trail. The site provides stunning views of Pago Pago Harbor and the surrounding coastline. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987, Blunts Point Battery stands as a testament to a pivotal period in American and Pacific history. The guns themselves only fired sixteen rounds at a target on August 28, 1941, which may account for their preservation.
