Public Transport
From Pago Pago, take a local bus towards the Pago Pago-to-Fagasa Road. The buses operate throughout the day, with services concluding around 5:00 PM from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays, bus services are significantly reduced, and on Sundays, only a handful of buses continue to operate. Bus fare is no more than $2.50 one way. Ask the driver to drop you off near the high point of the Pago Pago-to-Fagasa Road, where the trailhead is located. From there, it's a hike to the summit.

From anywhere in Pago Pago, a taxi can take you to the high point on the Pago Pago-to-Fagasa Road, where the Matafao Peak trailhead is located. Taxis in American Samoa operate on government-regulated fares. Agree on the fare with the driver before starting your journey. Taxi fares are about $1 per mile, with a minimum charge of $1. Expect to pay around $15-$20 for a taxi ride from Pago Pago to the trailhead.
Walking
From Matu'u, look for signs that indicate the trailhead for Matafao. The entrance to the trail is typically marked, but if you're unsure, ask a local for directions to the Matafao trail.
