Matafao Peak, rising 2,142 feet (653 meters) above sea level, is the highest point on Tutuila Island in American Samoa. This majestic mountain is more than just a geographical landmark; it's a place steeped in Samoan culture and history. The name "Matafao" translates to "Spear Head" in Samoan, and local legends associate the peak with the demigod Maui. Historically, Matafao served as a crucial vantage point for islanders, aiding in navigation and fishing practices. The hike to the summit is known to be challenging, with steep and rugged terrain. The National Park Service has worked to improve the trail, adding rungs and ropes to assist hikers. The trail winds through lush montane scrub vegetation, home to diverse plant species, some of which are endemic to Samoa. Keep an eye out for unique flora like Dipteris conjugata, a fern rare in the Samoan Islands. Reaching the summit rewards hikers with breathtaking panoramic views of Tutuila Island, the surrounding Pacific Ocean, and even Mount Fao on Upolu Island on a clear day. Ask the driver to drop you off near the high point of the Pago Pago-to-Fagasa Road, where the trailhead is located. From there, it's a hike to the summit.

Taxis in American Samoa operate on government-regulated fares. Agree on the fare with the driver before starting your journey. Taxi fares are about $1 per mile, with a minimum charge of $1. Expect to pay around $15-$20 for a taxi ride from Pago Pago to the trailhead.
