Getting There
Driving
From Pago Pago, rent a car and drive west on Route 1. Follow the road for approximately 16 miles to Taputimu. Look for signs indicating Fagatele Bay Trail. Parking is available near the trailhead. Be aware that local buses have limited service to Taputimu, especially on Saturdays and almost none on Sundays. Car rentals offer more flexibility. Expect to pay around $30-$50 per day for a rental car.
Walking
From the main highway in Futiga village, turn onto the dirt road near the landfill. Follow this road past the vegetable farm to a gate. Check in with Mr. Asuemu Fuimaono, the caretaker, register in the logbook, and receive an informational brochure. Vehicle access beyond the gate is restricted unless special conditions are met. The walk from the gate to the first educational sign is 2km, and another 1.5km to the bay. There is no charge for access to the sanctuary.
Public Transport
Catch a local 'aiga' bus from the bus depot at Fagatogo to the western end of Tutuila Island. Look for a bus with the village name 'Taputimu' displayed. The bus fare is no more than $2.50 one way. From Taputimu, it's approximately a 15-minute walk down a mountain road to the Fagatele Bay Trail. Note that bus services are heavily reduced on Saturdays and almost non-existent on Sundays.
