This site is a rare and well-preserved example of a World War II Pacific coastal gun installation. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987, it offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore military history amidst stunning natural scenery.In 1940, as tensions escalated during World War II, the United States began fortifying American Samoa. The Marines installed two 6-inch naval guns at Blunts Point, providing a commanding view of the harbor entrance. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and the subsequent capture of Guam by Japanese forces, American Samoa became a critical American base in the Western Pacific. The island was further fortified in anticipation of a potential attack. Although no attack ever materialized, American Samoa served as a vital supply and training point for American military actions in the Pacific.Today, visitors can hike the Blunts Point Trail to reach the battery. The trail offers moderately challenging terrain and rewards hikers with panoramic views of Pago Pago Harbor and the surrounding coastline. At the site, you can explore the gun emplacements, concrete structures, and a magazine built into the hillside. Interpretive signs provide historical context, detailing the strategic importance of Blunts Point during the war. The battery is open daily from 6 AM to 8 PM.
