Discover more about National Park of American Samoa

The National Park of American Samoa, established in 1993, offers a unique experience far removed from the typical U.S. national park. Located 2,600 miles southwest of Hawaii, it spans sections of three islands: Tutuila, Ofu, and Taʻū. This park is not just about stunning landscapes; it's a cultural immersion into the heart of Samoan traditions. Tutuila, the main island, features the visitor center in Pago Pago and offers access to scenic trails like the Mount 'Alava Trail and the coastal Le'ala Shoreline. Here, you can witness the blending of rainforest and rugged coastline. For a more secluded experience, venture to Ofu Island, known for its pristine beaches and vibrant coral reefs, perfect for snorkeling. Taʻū Island offers challenging hikes through rainforests and the opportunity to see Lata Mountain, the highest point in American Samoa. The park's uniqueness lies in its preservation of Samoan culture. The land is leased from Samoan villages, emphasizing respect for local customs. Visitors are encouraged to ask permission before entering village areas and to dress modestly. The park offers a chance to connect with nature and culture in an authentic, untamed environment. Remember that services operate on "island time," so flexibility is key. The park is open 24 hours a day, year-round, and has no entrance fees, but the visitor center has limited hours.
