Discover more about Blunts Point Battery

Perched on Matautu Ridge near Pago Pago, American Samoa, Blunts Point Battery stands as a silent sentinel of World War II. Also known as Blunts Point Naval Gun or Matautu Ridge Gun Site, this gun battery played a crucial role in fortifying the Samoan Islands following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Today, it offers visitors a unique blend of historical exploration and scenic hiking. In 1940, as global tensions escalated, the U.S. Marines installed two 6-inch naval guns at Blunts Point, with another battery at Breakers Point on the opposite side of the harbor. After Pearl Harbor in December 1941, and the capture of Guam, American Samoa became a vital American base in the Western Pacific, leading to further fortifications. Although never directly attacked, the island served as a critical supply and training hub for American military operations. The battery has been recently restored and is in good condition. Visitors can hike a moderately difficult 1.5-mile trail to explore the well-preserved gun emplacements and bunkers. From this vantage point, enjoy commanding views of Pago Pago Harbor and the surrounding coastline. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987, Blunts Point Battery preserves its historical significance for future generations. While exploring the site, remember to respect the signs and pathways, treating all structures and artifacts with care.
