Discover more about Blunts Point Trail

The Blunts Point Trail offers a rewarding hike with a mix of exercise, historical significance, and stunning views. Located within the National Park of American Samoa, the trail seamlessly connects to the WWII Heritage Trail, creating an extended path along the ridge above Utulei. As you ascend, you'll encounter two restored six-inch naval gun batteries that once protected Pago Pago Harbor after the Pearl Harbor bombing in 1941. These batteries symbolize American Samoa's vital role as a crucial link between the United States, Australia, and New Zealand during World War II. Interpretive signs along the trail provide historical context, detailing the strategic importance of this site. The trail itself is a rocky path that climbs the hillside, passing through lush rainforest with flowering plants and native bird songs. While the 0.6-mile (1 km) round trip is relatively short, some sections can be steep and slippery, especially after rain. Ropes are available in certain areas to assist with climbing. Upon reaching the gun batteries, you can explore the emplacements, ammunition storage, and picnic areas while enjoying panoramic views of Pago Pago Harbor, Faga'alu Bay, and beyond. For those seeking a more challenging adventure, the WWII Heritage Trail continues beyond the second gun battery, but it becomes steeper, narrower, and less maintained.
