Matafao Peak: Tutuila's Majestic Summit

Matafao Peak, rising 2,142 feet (653 meters) above sea level, is the highest point on Tutuila Island, American Samoa. This majestic peak is a remnant of a volcanic plug, a testament to the island's volcanic origins. The name “Matafao” translates to “Spear Head” in Samoan, possibly referencing its sharp, prominent appearance. Local legends associate Matafao with the demigod Maui, who is said to have fished up the islands. The hike to the summit is a challenging adventure, best undertaken during the dry season (May to October) to avoid slippery conditions. The trail, accessible from the high point of the Pago Pago-to-Fagasa Road, winds through a lush montane scrub environment.
