Getting There

    From the Pago Pago Market, head east along the main road (Route 1). Walk for approximately 0.5 miles, passing the A.P. Lutali Executive Office Building and the Feleti Barstow Library. Sadie's by the Sea will be on your left, directly on the waterfront. There are no costs associated with walking.

    From Fagatogo Market, board an aiga bus heading east towards Utulei. The bus fare is approximately $2.50. Ask the driver to drop you off at Sadie's by the Sea in Utulei. The hotel is located directly on the waterfront, a short walk from the bus stop. Aiga buses operate weekdays until 5:00 PM, with reduced service on Saturdays and no service on Sundays.

Sadie's by the Sea, formerly the Rainmaker Hotel, is a landmark in Utulei, American Samoa, offering a unique blend of history and beachfront relaxation. The hotel's location is ideal for exploring the area, with the National Park of American Samoa Visitors Center, Mount Alava, and Alega Beach a short distance away. The hotel has a rich history. In late 1916 and early 1917, W. Somerset Maugham stayed in a lodging house that would later become Sadie's by the Sea. He was traveling from Hawaii to Tahiti and was delayed due to a quarantine inspection. During his stay, Maugham wrote his famous short story, "Rain" (originally titled Miss Thompson), inspired by a fellow traveler, Miss Sadie Thompson. Guests can enjoy the hotel's private beach, take a dip in the outdoor pool, or savor a meal at the Goat Island Cafe, known for its American cuisine and waterfront views. The hotel is centrally located, within walking distance or a short taxi ride to the dock, central government offices, the Department of Education, the post office, and other restaurants.
