Discover more about National Park of American Samoa

The National Park of American Samoa, established in 1988, is a unique and remote national park located in the heart of the South Pacific. Situated approximately 2,600 miles southwest of Hawaii, the park encompasses portions of three islands: Tutuila, Ofu, and Taʻū. This park is the only U.S. National Park located south of the equator. The park's landscape includes tropical rainforests, rugged coastlines, and vibrant coral reefs. The park was created to protect the paleotropical rainforest ecosystem and the coral reefs that surround the islands. The park also aims to preserve Samoan cultural sites and artifacts. The park's land is owned by the Samoan people and leased to the National Park Service, allowing them to continue their traditional way of life. Tutuila, the largest island, features a mixed-species paleotropical rainforest and a marine sanctuary. The park extends to the steep ridgeline above Pago Pago Harbor. Ofu Island offers pristine beaches and exceptional snorkeling opportunities, while Ta'ū Island is home to the sacred site of Saua, considered the birthplace of Polynesian culture. The park is home to diverse wildlife, including native bats, various bird species, and marine life. The coral reefs support over 950 species of fish and over 250 species of coral. The park also protects endangered humpback whales and sea turtles. Visitors can explore the park's natural beauty through hiking, snorkeling, and cultural experiences. The visitor center in Pago Pago offers information and assistance in planning a visit.
