Overview
Old Aoloau is a historical landmark that provides a unique opportunity to delve into the cultural heritage of American Samoa's Western District. Located on Tutuila Island, this abandoned village, known locally as A'oloautuai, whispers tales of a bygone era. Before the 1940s, Aoloau was situated in the low-lying coastal areas along the north shores. Due to the rugged terrain and challenging sea currents, accessing the village was difficult. The men of A'oloau were known as skilled fishermen. Eighty years ago, the village relocated to Mount Olotele, and the villagers became skilled farmers and livestock raisers.Today, Old Aoloau invites visitors to explore its remnants and imagine life in a traditional Samoan village. Though largely reclaimed by nature, the site offers a peaceful atmosphere and a chance to appreciate the resilience and traditions of the local community. The surrounding landscapes, characterized by lush greenery, add to the allure, making it a haven for photography enthusiasts and those seeking a tranquil escape. Visiting Old Aoloau also provides an opportunity to engage with the local community.
