Discover more about Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley

The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, nestled in the Pyrenees, stands as Andorra's only UNESCO World Heritage Site, a title it earned in 2004. This glacial valley, a sanctuary of untouched beauty, occupies over 42 square kilometers, representing approximately 9% of Andorra's total land. The valley stretches through the parishes of Andorra la Vella, Escaldes-Engordany, Encamp, and Sant Julià de Lòria. What sets the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley apart is its remarkable preservation of a cultural landscape, a living testament to how humans have sustainably harvested mountain resources for over 700 years. Dwellings, terraced fields, and ironworking remains dot the landscape, narrating tales of resilience and adaptation. The valley is also a refuge for rare and endangered wildlife, earning it recognition as Andorra's "spiritual heart." Visitors can explore the valley's network of hiking trails, revealing restored shepherd cabins, enclosed vegetable gardens, and grazing areas. The valley offers a glimpse into a world where communal land management has persisted since the Middle Ages. The stone-paved pathways, including sections of the GR7 and GR11 footpaths, are characteristic features of this cultural landscape. In summer, the five mountain refuges offer overnight stays for those seeking a deeper immersion into the valley's tranquility. The highest point is Pic de la Portelleta (2,905m). The valley is bounded by mountain ridges and an escarpment, and is accessible only by foot, enhancing its isolated charm. The two small settlements, Entremesaigües and Ramio, once inhabited year-round, are now primarily summer residences, showcasing traditional Andorran architecture with granite houses and schist roofs.
