Discover more about Cal Pal

Cal Pal is more than just a museum; it's a journey through time, offering a glimpse into the heart of Andorran identity, origins, and its rich natural and cultural heritage. Located in the charming village of La Cortinada, in the parish of Ordino, this stately home has been documented since the 14th century, originally known as the Escoter inn. In 1435, the property was donated to Joan Pal d'Ordino by Bernat Escoter, a vicar, and his mother, Raimunda Escotera. The Pal family managed the house through the late Middle Ages and early modern era, eventually merging with the Casa Teixidó family via marriage, though the name Cal Pal remained. Anton “Tonillo” Torres Armengol, known as “el Pal”, was the last inhabitant; after his death in 1956, the house was sold in 1962 to Serafí Reig Ribó. Cal Pal stands as one of the most representative examples of Andorran vernacular architecture. Throughout the 16th and 19th centuries, the house saw numerous expansions, including the addition of a third annex, a dovecot, and two covered galleries. The north-east façade features striking carvings of human faces on the ends of the roof-beams. After being closed for more than 15 years, Cal Pal reopened as a sociocultural space in October 2018, following a meticulous restoration by its owners. Today, Cal Pal hosts temporary exhibitions and guided tours, offering visitors a chance to reflect on Andorran identity, history, and heritage.
