Discover more about Santuari de la Mare de Déu de Canòlich

Located at an altitude of 1,635 meters, the Santuari de la Mare de Déu de Canòlich has been a significant site for pilgrims and visitors for centuries. The sanctuary's history dates back to 1223 when, according to legend, a shepherd found an image of the Virgin Mary in a rock niche after following a bird with brilliant plumage. In response, the people of Sant Julià de Lòria built a shrine to the Virgin. The original church no longer exists. The current sanctuary, renovated in the 1970s, incorporates elements from previous shrines, including a Baroque altarpiece. The building has a rectangular plan with a bell tower. Inside, a barrel vault and a grand triumphal arch frame the Baroque altarpiece dedicated to Saint Mary. Although the Romanesque image of the Mother of God of Canòlich is now housed in the parish church of Sant Julià y San Germà, the sanctuary remains a cherished landmark. Each year, on the last Saturday of May, the town celebrates the Aplec (meeting), a popular climb to the sanctuary along the old path. The sanctuary is not adapted for people with limited mobility.
