Casa de la Vall: Andorra's Historic Parliament

Casa de la Vall, or the House of the Valley, stands as one of Andorra's most significant historical monuments. Constructed in the late 16th century (1580) as a manor house for the Busquets family, it later became the seat of the Consell General, Andorra's parliament, in 1702, a role it maintained until 2011. The building is located on a rocky promontory overlooking the Valira River valley in the heart of Andorra la Vella. The architecture blends features of a medieval fortress with a traditional Pyrenean house. The exterior showcases greyish stone walls, small windows, and a watchtower, reflecting its original defensive purpose. The main facade displays the coat of arms of the Busquets family and the Andorran coat of arms with the motto "Virtus, Unita, Fortior" (United virtue is stronger). Inside, visitors can explore several significant rooms. The ground floor houses the Criminal Court, featuring dark wooden benches and the original judge's podium. The first floor includes the Hall of Lost Steps, adorned with 16th-century wall paintings, and the main session room. The Cabinet of the Seven Keys, used to safeguard Andorra's important historical documents, is a highlight. The building also features a kitchen with its original stone hearth and cooking tools. Casa de la Vall provides a tangible link to Andorra's history, offering insights into its political and social evolution. It is open to the public for guided tours, allowing visitors to delve into the country's heritage. Note that the building has steep stairs and no elevator access.
