Perched atop a hill overlooking Luanda Bay, the Fortress of São Miguel is a striking reminder of Angola's complex history. Built in 1576 by the Portuguese, the fortress initially served as a crucial defensive structure for the burgeoning colonial city. Its thick walls and strategic location provided a vantage point to guard against intruders. Beyond its military role, the fortress played a significant, albeit grim, part in the transatlantic slave trade, serving as a major site for exporting enslaved people to Brazil. For many years, it functioned as a self-contained town, complete with cannons and administrative buildings. Elaborate ceramic tiles within the fort depict Angola's history. The courtyard features imposing statues of Portuguese figures, including the first king of Portugal and explorers like Diogo Cão and Vasco da Gama. Throughout its history, the fortress has undergone several transformations. Briefly under Dutch rule in the 17th century, it was renamed Fort Aardenburgh. Until 1975, it served as the headquarters for the Portuguese Armed Forces in Angola. Today, the fortress is home to the Museum of the Armed Forces (Museu Nacional de História Militar), showcasing weapons and artifacts related to Angola's wars of independence and civil war. Visitors can explore the fortress's well-preserved walls, courtyards, and exhibits, gaining insights into Angola's colonial past and military history while enjoying panoramic views of Luanda and its coastline.
