Discover more about Fortaleza de São Miguel

Perched atop a strategic promontory in Luanda, the Fortaleza de São Miguel is more than just a historical landmark; it's a journey through time. Built in 1576 by Paulo Dias de Novais, the first Governor of Angola, the fortress served as the primary defense against external threats, including Dutch, Spanish, and French pirates. For a brief period in the 17th century, the Dutch controlled the fortress, renaming it Fort Aardenburgh, before it was reclaimed by the Portuguese. Inside its thick limestone walls, which reach up to 12 meters in height, the Fortaleza de São Miguel once functioned as a self-contained town. Elaborate ceramic tiles, known as azulejos, depict Angola's history from its early years, offering a visual narrative of the region's past. The courtyard features imposing statues of Portuguese explorers and royalty, including Diogo Cão, Vasco da Gama, and the first king of Portugal. Throughout its history, the fortress has served various purposes, including a major site for the slave trade, a military headquarters, and a museum. Today, it houses the Museum of the Armed Forces, displaying artifacts and weapons from Angola's wars of independence and the civil war. Visitors can explore the exhibits, stroll along the ramparts, and enjoy the stunning views of Luanda Bay. The fortress provides a unique perspective on Angola's colonial history and its struggle for independence.
