Tundavala Gap: Angola's Jaw-Dropping Vista

Tundavala Gap (Fenda da Tundavala in Portuguese) is a geological marvel located approximately 18 km from Lubango, in Angola's Huíla Province. This dramatic canyon is part of the Serra da Leba escarpment, marking the western edge of the Humpata Plateau. The name 'Tundavala' comes from the Nyaneka language, meaning 'what is open/apart' or 'the aperture', fitting its appearance. Rising to over 2,200 meters, the gap offers a staggering 1,000-meter drop to the plains, providing panoramic views that stretch for tens of kilometers towards Namibe Province. The sheer scale of the landscape is awe-inspiring, encompassing approximately 10,000 square kilometers. Tundavala Gap is not only a visual spectacle but also a significant geoheritage site, showcasing unique geological formations shaped by tectonic activity and erosion over millions of years. The Angolan government recognized its cultural importance in 2012, designating it a cultural landscape and one of the country's Seven Natural Wonders.
