Discover more about Fortress of São Miguel

Perched atop a hill overlooking Luanda Bay, the Fortress of São Miguel is a powerful symbol of Angola's complex history. Constructed in 1576 by Paulo Dias de Novais, the fortress was the first defensive structure erected in Luanda, serving as a crucial stronghold for the Portuguese. For many years, it functioned as a self-contained town, its thick walls and imposing cannons protecting the inhabitants within. In the 17th century, the fortress briefly fell under Dutch control and was renamed Fort Aardenburgh before being reclaimed by the Portuguese. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the fortress underwent several renovations and expansions. The Fortaleza de São Miguel has served many purposes over the centuries. It was once a major site for the slave trade, with captives being shipped to Brazil. Until 1975, it served as the headquarters for the Commander-in-Chief of the Portuguese Armed Forces in Angola. Today, the Fortress of São Miguel is home to the Museum of the Armed Forces, displaying artifacts and exhibits related to Angola's military history. Visitors can explore the well-preserved grounds, admire the imposing statues of Portuguese figures, and learn about the fortress's role in shaping Angola's identity. The fortress also provides incredible panoramic views of Luanda Bay.
