Calandula Falls, also known as Quedas de Calandula in Portuguese, is a majestic waterfall situated in the Calandula municipality of Angola's Malanje Province. Historically known as Duque de Bragança Falls during the Angolan civil war, it has reverted to its original name, celebrating its Angolan heritage.
Located on the Lucala River, these falls are among the largest in Africa, boasting a height of 105 meters and a width of 400 meters. The sheer volume of water cascading down makes it a powerful and awe-inspiring sight, especially during the rainy season from November to April. The falls are set amidst a vibrant, green landscape, offering numerous photo opportunities and a chance to connect with nature.
Visitors can explore the falls from different vantage points. The town of Calandula provides panoramic views from the top, while the Pousada de Calandula allows a closer descent to the base for a more immersive experience. The Pousada, originally built in 1950 and renovated in 2017, offers lodging and a restaurant with stunning views.
The province of Malanje is rich in biodiversity, featuring exotic plant life and rare animal species. Nearby attractions include the mysterious rock formations of Pedras Negras de Pungo Andongo and the lesser-known Musseleje Falls.

Driving
From the town of Calandula, the falls are easily accessible by car. Follow the signs towards the Pousada de Calandula. A short distance before reaching the Pousada, you'll encounter a checkpoint where an entrance fee is collected. As of January 2022, the fee was 500 Kwanzas per person and 1000 Kwanzas per vehicle. The road to the Pousada is in poor condition in some sections.
Walking
Once at the Pousada de Calandula, there are walking trails leading to various viewpoints of the falls. Some trails lead to the top of the falls, while others descend closer to the base. Be aware that the trails can be muddy, especially during the rainy season. Local guides may offer their services to accompany you on these trails; negotiate the price beforehand. Note: Some visitors have reported being asked for excessive fees by unofficial guides and for parking. Exercise caution and confirm costs before agreeing to any services.
