Embark on an unforgettable journey to the summit of Bordeaux Mountain, the highest peak on St. John, via the Bordeaux Mountain Trail. This challenging 2.4-mile hike (one way) rewards adventurers with breathtaking 360-degree views of the island, the Virgin Islands National Park, and the vast expanse of the Caribbean Sea. The trail begins near the picturesque Lameshur Bay, a location with its own rich history as a former plantation. The initial section follows a steep, rocky path, once used to transport bay rum leaves harvested on the mountain. As you ascend, keep an eye out for the ruins of the Lameshur Bay Plantation, including the old sugar factory and bay rum distillery, remnants of St. John's agricultural past. The terrain varies from open, sun-exposed areas to shaded tropical forests, so be prepared for changing conditions. The trail can be strenuous, with an elevation change of approximately 1,000 feet, requiring hikers to pace themselves and watch their footing. The rocky and sometimes slippery conditions necessitate sturdy hiking shoes. As you approach the summit, the vegetation transitions to a lush tropical forest. The panoramic views from the top are the ultimate reward, offering an unparalleled perspective of St. John's diverse landscapes and the sparkling waters that surround it. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of St. Croix in the distance.
