Trunk Bay: A Caribbean Gem

Trunk Bay, consistently ranked among the world's most beautiful beaches, is a crown jewel of St. John and the Virgin Islands National Park. Named after the leatherback turtles (known locally as 'trunks') that once nested here in large numbers, this idyllic bay offers more than just stunning scenery. The beach itself is a crescent of soft, white sand fringed by coconut palms, leading into calm, turquoise waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Trunk Bay is particularly famous for its 650-foot underwater snorkeling trail, located just off the beach near Trunk Cay. This trail provides an accessible and fascinating glimpse into the underwater world, with informational plaques guiding snorkelers through coral formations and diverse marine life. Keep an eye out for colorful fish, sea turtles, and the occasional barracuda. Beyond its natural beauty, Trunk Bay also boasts excellent facilities. These include restrooms, showers, a snack bar, and rentals for snorkeling gear and beach chairs. Lifeguards are typically on duty, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all. The beach is part of the Virgin Islands National Park and has a $5 entrance fee. Historically, the area was first settled around 700 AD by the Taino tribe and later became a successful sugar estate. In the 20th century, Paul Boulon Sr. purchased Trunk Bay, and later, Laurance Rockefeller acquired the land, eventually donating it to the National Park Service. This ensured the preservation of Trunk Bay's natural beauty for generations to come.
