Discover more about Maho Bay Beach

Maho Bay Beach, nestled on the north shore of St. John, is a serene escape renowned for its crystal-clear waters and frequent sea turtle sightings. The bay's calm and shallow waters make it an ideal spot for families with children and novice snorkelers. Protected by steep hillsides, Maho Bay remains tranquil even when other beaches experience choppier conditions. The beach itself is relatively narrow, a result of historical sand removal, but it still offers plenty of space to relax and soak up the sun. The shoreline is fringed with coconut palms, sea grapes, and Maho trees, providing ample shade. The beach is named after the beach maho tree (Hibiscus tilaceus), known for its heart-shaped leaves and yellow flowers that turn purple. Maho Bay is particularly famous for its sea turtles, which feed on the seagrass in the bay. Snorkelers can easily spot these gentle creatures, along with rays and various tropical fish. The eastern and western shorelines offer opportunities to explore patch reefs and coral formations. Beyond the beach, Maho Crossroads, located across the street, offers a tiki bar, food truck, souvenir shop, and beach rentals. Visitors can rent chairs, umbrellas, kayaks, and paddleboards to enhance their beach experience. A pavilion with picnic tables and grills is available on the western side, along with restrooms. While Maho Bay is a popular destination, arriving early is recommended to secure parking. The beach's easy access and abundant marine life make it a memorable stop on any St. John itinerary.
