Green Island: A Caribbean Escape

Green Island, situated off the eastern coast of Antigua, is a tranquil and uninhabited haven that beckons travelers seeking natural beauty and serenity. This small island is renowned for its stunning beaches, where powdery white sands meet the clear turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. The surrounding reefs teem with vibrant marine life, making it a prime location for snorkeling, with diverse coral formations and colorful fish easily visible in the clear waters. Keep an eye out for sea turtles! Green Island is privately owned by the Mill Reef Club since 1947, but the north and northwest side of the island are open for yachting and day trips. The island itself is relatively small, measuring about two kilometers from west to east. Its limited amenities enhance its appeal as a peaceful getaway, inviting visitors to pack a picnic and bask in the sun or explore the island's natural paths. Historically, Colonel Richard Ayres was granted the lease of Green Island in 1673. By 1731, Stephen Blizard owned it, and his heirs still owned it in 1790. The heirs of Robert Maginley owned the island in 1921. Today, little evidence remains of the former sugar mill. Green Island is also part of Antigua's Offshore Islands Important Bird Area, supporting significant populations of various bird species.
