Discover more about Nelson's Dockyard

Nelson's Dockyard, located in English Harbour, Antigua, is a beautifully preserved example of an 18th-century British naval dockyard. Named after Admiral Horatio Nelson, who was stationed here from 1784 to 1787, the dockyard served as a strategic base for the Royal Navy in the Caribbean. Construction of the dockyard began in the 1740s, and it gradually expanded to include workshops, storehouses, officers' quarters, and other essential facilities. Enslaved Africans played a crucial role in the dockyard's construction and operation. The dockyard provided a safe harbor for British ships, allowing them to undergo repairs, resupply, and prepare for naval operations against rival powers, particularly the French. Today, Nelson's Dockyard is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a vibrant tourist attraction. The meticulously restored buildings now house shops, restaurants, hotels, and museums, offering visitors a unique blend of history and modern amenities. Visitors can explore the Dockyard Museum, housed in the former Naval Officer's and Clerk's House, to learn about the dockyard's history and naval life during the colonial period. A walk along the marina provides views of impressive yachts and ships from around the world. The surrounding Nelson's Dockyard National Park offers hiking trails, scenic viewpoints, and opportunities to discover the natural beauty of Antigua.
