Discover more about Clarence House

Clarence House, nestled in English Harbour, is an architectural and historical gem that embodies Antigua's colonial past and naval heritage. Built between 1804 and 1806, the current structure replaced an earlier building rumored to have been built for the Duke of Clarence, who later became King William IV. Initially, it served as the residence for the naval commissioner of the dockyard, designed to impress visiting admirals and governors. As the importance of the naval dockyard declined, Clarence House transitioned into the country residence for the Governor of Antigua. Over the years, it hosted numerous dignitaries, including Winston Churchill and Princess Margaret. In fact, Princess Margaret even spent the first night of her honeymoon here. The house has undergone several modifications and restorations, including a major renovation in 2012 after hurricane damage. Today, Clarence House functions as a museum and event space managed by the National Parks Authority. Visitors can explore the elegantly preserved rooms, admire the antique furniture, and learn about the lives of the military and civilian elites who once resided here. The meticulously maintained gardens offer breathtaking views of English Harbour and Freeman's Bay.
