Discover more about Mount Obama

Mount Obama, rising 402 meters (1,319 feet) above sea level, is the highest point in Antigua and Barbuda. Formerly known as Boggy Peak, it was renamed on August 4, 2009, to commemorate Barack Obama's historic election as the first Black president of the United States. The name change reflects the island's appreciation of diversity and progress. The mountain is located in the southwestern part of Antigua, within the Mount Obama National Park. The park is an important area for soil and water conservation and protects native plant and bird species. It's designated as an Important Bird Area ecosystem, supporting nine out of 11 Lesser Antilles restricted-range bird species. The hike to the summit offers stunning views of the island, the Caribbean Sea, and, on a clear day, neighboring islands like Montserrat and St. Kitts. The trails vary in difficulty, catering to both seasoned hikers and casual walkers. The area is also rich in history; during the 17th and 18th centuries, the hills served as a refuge for escaped African slaves known as “maroons.” While the summit is crowned by telecommunications towers, the panoramic vistas and the sense of accomplishment make the climb worthwhile. Visitors can explore various trails, enjoy a picnic, and immerse themselves in the natural beauty and cultural significance of this landmark.
