Discover more about Antigua's Donkey Sanctuary Humane Society

Nestled in the lush countryside near Bethesda, Antigua's Donkey Sanctuary offers a touching glimpse into the lives of rescued donkeys. Operated by the Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society, this sanctuary provides a permanent home to over 150 donkeys who have been injured, abused, or otherwise found themselves at risk. Donkeys have a long history in Antigua, dating back to the 1630s when they were brought to the island by English settlers. These animals played a vital role in transporting goods and supporting the island's agricultural industry. However, with the decline of the sugar industry and the rise of modern transportation, donkeys were often abandoned and left to roam freely. Considered pests by some, they faced dangers from traffic, mistreatment, and lack of resources. The Antigua Donkey Sanctuary steps in to provide these animals with a safe and loving environment. Visitors can meet the donkeys, learn their individual stories, and even help with grooming. The sanctuary is wheelchair accessible, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the experience. Donations are welcome and essential to support the ongoing care of the donkeys, covering the costs of food, veterinary care, and shelter maintenance. Visiting the sanctuary offers an alternative to Antigua's beaches, providing a unique and meaningful experience for animal lovers of all ages. It's a chance to connect with these gentle creatures, support a worthy cause, and learn about the history and challenges faced by donkeys in Antigua.
