Discover more about Altos de Elorriaga

Altos de Elorriaga, located in the Monserrat neighborhood, stands as a testament to Buenos Aires' rich history. Constructed between 1812 and 1820 for Juan Bautista Elorriaga, a prominent merchant, the house reflects the architectural style of the time. It's a 'casa de altos,' referring to its two-story structure, which was a mark of distinction in those days. The house is organized around two courtyards and originally featured a mirador (viewing tower) on the terrace, used to observe ships arriving at the port, which was only 200 meters away. The building's corner lacks an 'ochava,' a chamfered corner, which was uncommon after 1822. Today, Altos de Elorriaga is part of the Buenos Aires Museo, offering visitors a journey through the city's past with interactive exhibits and historical artifacts. The museum showcases the transformation of Buenos Aires through its collections, including architectural elements, furniture, photographs, and everyday objects. It serves as a valuable resource for understanding the social, cultural, and architectural changes that shaped the city.
