Discover more about Block of the Lights Historical-Cultural Complex

The Block of the Lights Historical-Cultural Complex, known as 'Manzana de las Luces,' is a significant landmark steeped in the rich history of Buenos Aires. This complex encompasses a collection of colonial-era buildings and intriguing underground tunnels, each with its unique story to tell. Originally a Jesuit mission dating back to 1686, the block became a center of intellectual and political activity. The complex includes the San Ignacio Church, a cloister residence, and other administrative buildings. The Jesuit order constructed the church between 1686 and 1722, later adding a school, museum, library, and the city's first pharmacy. After the Jesuit order was suppressed in 1767, the school was transformed into the Royal College of San Carlos, the church became a cathedral, and the pharmacy became Argentina's first medical college. Visitors can explore the underground tunnels, believed to have been used for ammunition storage during Argentina's war of independence. The complex hosts various cultural events, art exhibitions, and workshops, making it a vibrant space where history and contemporary culture converge.
