Parque Lezama: A Historic Oasis in Buenos Aires

Explore Buenos Aires' history and culture in this vibrant park, featuring gardens, monuments, and a lively Sunday market.

4.5

Parque Lezama is more than just a park; it's a journey through Buenos Aires' rich history and culture. Historians believe that the park's eastern side marks the spot where Pedro de Mendoza first landed in 1536, during his initial, unsuccessful attempt to found Buenos Aires. In the 1800s, José Gregorio Lezama purchased the land and transformed it into luxurious private gardens, importing exotic trees and hiring European landscapers. Upon his death, his widow sold the land to the city in 1894, stipulating that it be turned into a public park named in his honor. The family's mansion was converted into the National Historical Museum. Today, Parque Lezama offers a tranquil escape with its tree-lined avenues, sculptures, monuments, and the Russian Orthodox Church nearby. The park comes alive on Sundays with a crafts market and live music. Visitors can explore the National Historical Museum, relax in the rose gardens, or enjoy the views from the esplanade.
