Discover more about Grey Lake

Grey Lake (Lago Grey) is a stunning body of water located in the western sector of Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia. The lake owes its existence and characteristic milky grey color to the Grey Glacier, one of the many glaciers that make up the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. This vast ice field is the second-largest extrapolar ice field in the world and a major source of fresh water. The lake itself stretches for approximately 32.6 square kilometers and reaches depths of over 500 meters. Visitors are treated to mesmerizing views of icebergs that have broken off from the glacier, drifting serenely across the lake's surface. The size and color of these icebergs vary depending on the light, the age of the ice, and the sediments they contain, creating a constantly changing spectacle. Grey Lake was originally named Parque Nacional de Turismo Lago Grey in 1959 when the area was first protected. In 1970, it became part of the larger Torres del Paine National Park. The area around Grey Lake was among the first to be protected in Chilean Patagonia, thanks in part to the explorations and photographs of Alberto Maria De Agostini, an Italian priest and explorer who documented the region's beauty in the early 20th century. Today, Grey Lake is a popular destination for hikers, kayakers, and nature enthusiasts. Boat tours offer close-up views of the Grey Glacier, while hiking trails along the lake's shore provide panoramic vistas of the Paine Massif and the surrounding Patagonian landscape. The lake is a key part of the famous W Trek and Circuit trail, attracting visitors from around the globe.
