The current basilica's construction began in 1887, based on an 1882 projection. The altar, crafted from Carrara marble, is of Italian origin. The church was officially named a cathedral in 1934 and a basilica in 1966. The cathedral's architecture is a blend of Baroque and Neoclassical styles, completed in the 20th century.
