Discover more about Purmamarca Jujuy

Purmamarca, meaning 'Village of the Virgin Land' in the Aymara language, is a picturesque village in the Jujuy Province of Argentina. Its history dates back to pre-Hispanic times, later becoming part of the Inca Trail. Today, it's renowned for its stunning natural beauty, particularly the Cerro de los Siete Colores, a mountain displaying a breathtaking palette of colors that change with the light. The village itself is a charming blend of colonial and indigenous influences. Adobe houses line the red dirt roads, and the central square hosts a vibrant artisan market where you can find local crafts, textiles, and souvenirs. The Santa Rosa de Lima Church, a historical landmark, stands as a testament to the region's rich heritage. The Cerro de los Siete Colores is the star attraction, its unique colors the result of millions of years of geological activity. Marine, lake, and river sediments, elevated by tectonic movements, created the layers of ochre, yellow, orange, green, lavender, and purple that paint the mountain. The best time to view the colors is in the morning when the sunlight illuminates the landscape. Beyond the Hill of Seven Colors, visitors can explore the Paseo de los Colorados, a scenic trail that winds through the colorful landscape. The Salinas Grandes, Argentina's vast salt flats, are also within easy reach, offering another unforgettable experience. Purmamarca is more than just a pretty face; it's a place where you can immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of the Argentine Northwest.
