Discover more about Centro Cívico Bariloche

The Centro Cívico of San Carlos de Bariloche is more than just a civic center; it's the heart and soul of the city. Opened on March 17, 1940, the complex was designed by architect Ernesto de Estrada, with collaboration from Alejandro Bustillo, and showcases a unique blend of European and North American architectural influences. The buildings are constructed using local materials such as cypress and larch wood, and tufa stone extracted from Mount Carbón, reflecting the surrounding mountains and woods. Dominating the central square is a complex of buildings that house the municipal government, the Francisco P. Moreno Museum of Patagonia, and the Domingo Faustino Sarmiento Library. The Museum of Patagonia offers insights into the region's natural history, prehistory, the history of the original indigenous peoples, and regional history. The square itself is a gathering place for locals and tourists alike, hosting cultural and social events throughout the year. The Centro Cívico's alpine-inspired architecture pays homage to Bariloche's German and Swiss heritage, with tufa-brick facades, slate roofs, and wooden balconies. The square provides stunning views of Nahuel Huapi Lake, making it a picturesque spot for leisurely strolls and photography. The area is surrounded by shops, cafes, and restaurants, where visitors can savor local cuisine and shop for handicrafts.
