Monte Susana, located a short distance from Ushuaia, is a captivating destination offering stunning panoramic views and a connection to the region's history. Rising to approximately 520 meters above sea level, near the vegetation limit of Ushuaia's mountains, Monte Susana provides a vantage point to appreciate the city, the Beagle Channel, and Tierra del Fuego National Park. The mountain's history is intertwined with Ushuaia's past. In the late 19th century, the Argentine government established a prison in Ushuaia to assert its presence in the remote territory. The prison, built in 1902, housed repeat offenders and political prisoners who were tasked with hard labor, including work on Monte Susana. After the prison's closure in 1947, the mountain was rediscovered by nature enthusiasts. Today, Monte Susana is a popular destination for hiking and outdoor activities. Several trails wind through the mountain's diverse ecosystems, from the Beagle Channel coast to the native forest and the rocky, high-altitude terrain. The most recommended trail leads to a viewpoint offering views of Ushuaia, the Beagle Channel, and the Chilean islands on the horizon. The mountain is accessible year-round, but caution is advised during autumn and winter due to shorter daylight hours, freezing temperatures, and potential ice or snow. Whether you're seeking panoramic views, a connection to history, or an invigorating hike, Monte Susana offers an unforgettable experience in Ushuaia.
