Discover more about Saint Christopher

The Saint Christopher, a rusting shipwreck in Ushuaia's harbor, is a captivating reminder of the region's maritime history. Built in 1943 as a Royal Navy tugboat named HMS Justice during World War II, the vessel was later sold to an Argentine company. In 1953, it was involved in an attempt to salvage the Monte Cervantes, a German cruise ship that sank near Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse in 1930. The salvage operation failed, and the Saint Christopher, damaged, was beached in Ushuaia in 1957, where it remains today. Now a prominent landmark, the Saint Christopher offers visitors a tangible connection to Ushuaia's past. Its weathered wooden hull and distinctive silhouette create a striking contrast against the backdrop of the Beagle Channel and the Martial Mountains. The wreck is easily accessible and has become a favorite spot for photographers and history enthusiasts. The ship is particularly stunning when lit up at night. While visitors cannot board the Saint Christopher, its presence evokes a sense of adventure and reflection on the challenges faced by those who navigated these treacherous waters. The surrounding area provides opportunities for scenic walks along the coast, offering views of diverse birdlife and marine life. The Saint Christopher is more than just a shipwreck; it's a symbol of Ushuaia's resilient spirit and a testament to its rich maritime heritage.
