Car
From the center of Tilcara, head southeast on Avenida Dr. Eduardo Casanova. Continue for about 2 kilometers until you reach the intersection with Ruta Nacional 9. Turn left onto Ruta Nacional 9 and follow the signs towards the Quebrada de Humahuaca. After approximately 5 kilometers, look for a sign indicating the entrance to Castillos de Huichaira on your right. There is parking available near the trailhead. Note that there may be a small entrance fee for accessing the hiking area.
Public Transportation
To reach Castillos de Huichaira by public transportation, walk to the main bus terminal in Tilcara, which is located near the Plaza Central. Look for any local buses heading towards Humahuaca or the Quebrada de Humahuaca, as they often stop near popular hiking areas. Inform the driver you want to get off at Castillos de Huichaira. The ride takes about 15-20 minutes. After disembarking, follow the signs to the hiking area. Please be aware that the schedule for these buses can vary, so check for the latest timings.
Walking
For those who enjoy walking, you can hike to Castillos de Huichaira directly from Tilcara. Start from the Plaza Central and head southeast on Avenida Dr. Eduardo Casanova. Continue walking for about 2 kilometers until you reach Ruta Nacional 9. Cross the road carefully and proceed along the dirt path indicated by signs for Castillos de Huichaira. This hike is approximately 7 kilometers one way and may take around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your pace. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
